It was created in 1979 when Georgia Power completed the construction of the Wallace Dam on the Oconee River.

It runs through Georgia’s Morgan, Greene, and Putnam counties and is separated from its sister, lake Sinclair, by the Wallace Dam. This vast lake has 400 miles of shoreline and 10 championship golf courses.


Lake Oconee has many attractions to entertain you, an abundance of southern dining restaurants, top golf courses and lake activities providing unlimited water fun for the entire family.
For the Arts and Museum lover, nearby Eaton, GA is home to the Plaza Arts Center and the Georgia Writer’s Museum. The historical buildings in downtown Greensboro are great for sightseeing and shopping.

Three parks are available for outdoor activities: Lawrence Shoals, Parks Ferry and Old Salem. The parks provide access to Lake Oconee for boating, water skiing and fishing. In addition to water-based recreation, the area offers more fun that does not stop at the shore. The Oconee National Forest covers some 37,000 acres and features camping, hunting, equestrian trails and wildlife viewing.

Business and Economy in Lake Oconee, GA

The Lake Oconee region enjoys a stable economy.  Major employers vary by each county in the Lake Oconee area.  Morgan County on the west side has two large employers – The Morgan County Board of Education and Georgia-Pacific.  Putnam County to the south has three large employers – Horton Industries, the Putnam County School System and Georgia Power Co.  In Greene County on the east side of the lake, the majority of employment is in the tourism industry at Reynolds Plantation and The Ritz-Carlton Lodge.
